NYPD Warrantless Apartment Entry Results in Shooting of Friendly Dog

Myasia Dickerson of Brooklyn, recounted the following regarding the events of April 11, 2015:

“On the morning of Saturday April 11, 2015, the NYPD without warrant or permission opened my front door allowing my family dogs to run out of the apartment. Officer Bachthaler of the 81st precinct drew her firearm recklessly discharging her weapon and striking my 9 month old puppy (Zeus). When I heard the gunshot, I ran out of my apartment screaming thinking she shot my (human) son.

When asked why she shot my dog she then nonchalantly says “He shouldn’t have been in the hallway.” Not one of the officers gave a hand for assistance while my dog squirmed across the floor bleeding profusely. I rushed my beloved animal to Blue Pearl Animal Hospital downtown Brooklyn where I was told his treatment would cost thousands.

I immediately contacted the precinct where I was told it’s not their responsibility and to speak with community affairs. Left with no money and no solution, Zeus was unable to receive the surgery he desperately needed to repair the torn muscles and wounds received from the gunshot. After many calls a family friend agreed to loan me the money to cover the costs of Zeus’ treatment.

Following this horrific ordeal, I later found out the NY Daily News published an article that was not only false but, painting this officer as a hero. They failed to mention that this officer discharged her weapon within feet of my son, try to murder his dog right in front of his eyes, and left my dog to bleed to death with no assistance. My 10 year old son is traumatized! He hasn’t been able to sleep and I have no way to explain this to him.

Now we are left with thousands of dollars in debt and I can not afford to get my son the therapy he needs after witnessing something so horrific. We are now reaching out to not only get justice but to get my son the help he needs to heal hopefully get over this incident.”
