VERMILION, Ohio – An Ohio police officer is facing suspension following an investigation that concluded he went to work at a firing range while under the influence of alcohol.

On May 18, Vermilion police officer Daniel Shupe showed up at a gun range to act as the range safety officer. Another police officer, Mike Reinheimer, noticed alcohol on Shupe’s breath.

Reinheimer issued a breathalyzer test that showed Shupe had been consuming alcohol. Reinheimer said he then shut down the shooting range, relieved Shupe of his firearm, and sent him home with another police officer.

“Corporal Shupe’s cruiser was at the range, and there was no way I was gonna allow him to operate the cruiser back here,” Reinheimer told a local Fox affiliate.

Vermilion Police Chief Chris Hartung recommended a ten day suspension without pay for the incident. The punishment will be reviewed and either approved or denied by Vermilion Mayor Eileen Bulan.
