Investigation Continues After St. Paul Police Shot Man with Rifle
St. Paul police are investigating after they shot a man Monday afternoon who had a rifle and was wearing a bulletproof vest.
Police officials say officers tried using nonlethal ammunition before fatally shooting the man.
Officers were called to a home at 411 White Bear Avenue about 3:20 p.m. Monday on a report of a man with a rifle.
Sgt. Paul Paulos says officers encountered a man wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with a rifle.
Paulos says tactical officers and negotiators arrived on the scene. He says the man eventually came out of the house, multiple shots were fired and the suspect was hit. He died at the scene. No officers were injured.
Witnesses say they heard 15 to 20 gunshots.
Police initially said there was an exchange of gunfire, but later said they were investigating whether the man actually fired his rifle. He has not been identified.
Four officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave, in keeping with department policy.
