California Cops Shoot at Each Other
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department is investigating an incident in which a deputy assigned to the Rancho Cordova Police Department mistakenly shot at another officer.
At 4:40 a.m. Tuesday, the sheriff’s communications center received a call from a man who reported hearing voices taunting him across the street from his residence in the 11200 block of Point East Drive in Rancho Cordova.
The dispatched officer arrived and determined that the man was intoxicated, but able care for himself, creating no threat to himself or others, according to a Police Department news release.
As the dispatched officer left the apartment into a dimly lighted, enclosed stairwell, he encountered a darkened figure at the base of the stairwell who he believed was holding a weapon. The dispatched officer fired one shot from his duty weapon at the individual, who turned out to be a second uniformed officer responding to provide cover for the dispatched officer.
The officer was not injured. The round missed him and lodged in the stairwell door frame.
Sheriff’s officials said the dispatched officer is a 10-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. He has been removed from his enforcement assignment until investigators develop more information on the circumstances of the shooting and determine what, if any, administrative actions are necessary, officials said.
